There are museums,  science centers, even a presidential library, many within walking distance of Lions Gate, including:
Michael C Carlos Museum
The Michael C. Carlos Museum is administered by Emory University on its campus. The Carlos Museum has the largest collections in the Southeast United States of objects from ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome, the Near East, and the ancient Americas. The collections are housed in a Michael Graves designed building which is open to the public.

Jimmy Carter Library and Museum
The Jimmy Carter Library and Museum in Atlanta, Georgia houses U.S. President Jimmy Carter's papers and other material relating to the Carter administration and the Carter family's life. The library also hosts special exhibits, such as Carter's Nobel Peace Prize and a full-scale replica of the Oval Office, including a copy of the Resolute Desk. It sits among stunning grounds, gardens, and a small lake.  Don't miss the koi pond next to the Center's onsite restaurant.

Fernbank Museum of Natural History‎
The Museum offers permanent and visiting exhibits about natural science. It includes an IMAX theater, a full-size skeleton of an Argentinosaurus, the largest known dinosaur ever to walk the Earth, and several kid-friendly, hands-on exhibits.

Fernbank Science Center
Fernbank Science Center features the 65-acre Fernbank Forest, a planetarium, an observatory with a 36" telescope (that's wide, not long), and a number of wonderful hands-on science exhibits, including an actual Apollo 6 spacecraft module.

Callanwolde Fine Arts Center
The Callanwolde Fine Arts Center is a community arts conservatory and cultural center in Druid Hills. Listed on the National Register of Historic Sites, its 27,000 sq/ft. Gothic-Tudor style mansion is situated on a 12.5-acre estate of beautifully landscaped gardens and wooded grounds. The Center offers fine arts events and classes for all ages.
